Why Earth Sciences?

I’m in my 3rd year of my PhD studying magnetic fields that were generated billions of years ago in the solar system, by studying magnetic record trapped by meteorites. Earth Sciences is great because it has allowed me to spend a lot of my degree outside doing fieldwork all over the world.

Why Cambridge?

I’ve now been studying in Cambridge for seven years and I love how beautiful it is and the fact that I get to work with interesting, driven and talented people on a daily basis.

Beyond the boat..

I also enjoy horse riding, rock climbing and long distance running. I play the flute with the Cambridge University Wind Orchestra and like to watch the Great British Bake Off in my pyjamas.

My Grandad is one of my biggest inspirations – he rowed for Ireland in the 1930s and is always telling me I can push myself as, after all, it’s much easier now the boats and blades aren’t made out of wood!

Anna Watkins is also an inspiration to me – we both went to Newnham college and studied Earth Sciences and it is amazing to see that someone from a similar background to me can become a world-class athlete.
