The CUWBC Development Squad Camp is underway with 24 rowers and coxes from 15 of the Cambridge Colleges. The camp runs for 4 weeks and is an intensive schedule, designed to get the most fitness and technical benefit out of the time available. The training program is intense to give participants an idea of what trialing for the Boat Races is like. However it is also flexible to enable PhD students, or those who have academic/work experience placements and internships to participate.

The program also involves competing at selected Regattas to gain racing experience – some of the group have raced at Henley Women’s Regatta and others will race at Kingston Regatta on the 14th July.

Charlotte Jackson is a PhD student in Earth Sciences and was in the Jesus W1 crew that maintained Headship at the recent May Bumps. Charlotte said:

“I was reluctant to row at first but soon got hooked and have now rowed in Jesus W1 for 4 years. I’ve decided it’s time to push myself on and trial for CUWBC.”

“I competed with the Development Squad at BUCS Regatta, racing in the Intermediate 4+ am I am now taking part in the summer program – and really enjoying it!”

Charlotte will be taking control of our Instagram account tomorrow (Tuesday 3rd July) showing you what a day involves for someone combining the Development Squad Camp and also PhD studies – be sure to tune in!
