2019 Development Squad Wraps Up

Development Squad Wraps Up with Light Blue Battles at Kingston Regatta

For the past few weeks, CUWBC has run a joint Development Squad with our partners at CULRC.  Where we welcomed student athletes from 19 Cambridge Colleges!

In “Dev Squad”, we give student athletes from across any of the 31 Cambridge colleges a taste of the University Trialling lifestyle and program.  A day starts with beautiful early morning rowing on the water in Ely and in the afternoons land training in Goldie Boathouse, Cambridge.  The month long camp is a great opportunity for students to develop skills on and off the water, alongside being involved in the initial trialing process.

This Saturday, Dev Squad  raced at Kingston Regatta,  their first opportunity to represent the Light Blues. This was the culmination of their hard work and dedication over camp and they came away with some hardware to boot!

Georgie Archer (Trinity College) comments,

“Through taking part in the CUWBC Development Squad I have had a taste of the big step up from college rowing to uni level rowing, which has left me nothing but keen for more next year. Having only started rowing in September it has been a baptism of fire, but the camp has provided a fantastic opportunity to improve my rowing, with the support of incredible coaches and alongside a bunch of like-minded athletes. It has been exciting to meet some of the current trialling athletes and to have a taste of what the schedule involves, including representing the university at Kingston Regatta, which in itself was a rollercoaster: I experienced my first capsize (which is apparently hard in a 4) and won my first pot! I now can’t wait to trial next year and feel much more prepared for the onslaught of intensive training, even if I still don’t quite love erging!”

Cambridge entered three crews in the B2 Women’s Coxed Four event.  Each crew came away with the victory in their morning heats.  This made the three-boat final a Cambridge Light Blue battle, with the crew of Emma Pike (Emmanuel), Anna Samuel (Caius), Georgie Archer, Zelna Weich (Homerton), and Coxswain Angela Harper (Churchill) coming away victorious against their teammates despite capsizing earlier in the day during the warmup for the heat.

Later in the day, we fielded two B2 Women’s Eight’s with student athletes from the three fours and those athletes still waiting for their first chance to race. Both crews came out of their heats victorious!

This made for a second all Light Blue final race. Our crew of Casey Shepard (Jesus), Yfke van der Heijden (Girton), Emma Pike, Anna Samuel, Georgie Archer, Zelna Weich, Irina Ferapontova (Trinity Hall), Gloria Jansen (Lucy Cavendish), and coxswain Jamie Bailey (John’s) were the winners.

About the day’s racing, Ulrika Andersson (Queens’) says,

“It was a great experience to represent Cambridge at Kingston regatta, and to do some exciting side-by-side racing (something we don’t often see on the Cam!). An intense day overall with lots of races, the highlight for me was to get through to race in two all-Cambridge finals!”

We’re looking forward to welcoming back our Development Squad athletes as well as returners from last year’s Boat Race squad and students new to Cambridge for our pre-Michaelmas training at the end of August!

Look out for the new faces who will be part of The Boat Race and Lightweight Boat Race crews
