18 Feb 2013 BUCS Head winners
Following last weekend’s trip to Boston for the GB Rowing Trials, the CUWBC was back there again on 17th February, this time with the full squad to compete in the BUCS (British Universities and College Sport) Head. Originally due to be held in Peterborough, the race was relocated to Boston due to flooding on the banks of the Nene. The 5km course was downstream with a 90 degree bend just past the 2km point.
Once on the water, the squad felt very at home on the River Witham as it was very reminiscent of the Great Ouse in Ely, although even with fairly ‘bland’ scenery, it arguably has a few more landmarks!
As the last crew to go off in the Championship Women’s Eights, the ‘A’ crew had a strong start, setting up a consistent rhythm and overtaking the crew ahead before the corner. Pushing on into a moderate headwind in the final 2km, they maintained their rhythm from the first half to finish in a time of 18:23.8, winning the Championship category ten seconds clear of the rest of the field.
The ‘B’ and ‘C’ crews also had successful rows in the Intermediate Women’s Eights, finishing first and second in times of 19:42.4 and 19:45.1 which would have placed them 8th and 9th in the Championship category.
Overall, the day’s racing yielded some excellent results, showing how the squad has moved on since the Diamond Jubilee Rowing Championships back in October.
