21 Jan CUW Sculling Success
CUWBC members Rachael Jefferies and Guen Bradbury spent much of Michaelmas term in singles. They raced in a quad in the Fours’ Head together with Charlotte Jefferies (Rachael’s younger sister) and Jen Hawton (BB ’06), finishing in third place in a strong WS2 field.
Guen Bradbury also sculled with her sister Rosamund in the Pairs’ Head, picking up the women’s Senior 2 doubles pennant in a time that was only 11 seconds off the fastest women’s double. Competing in the Sculler’s Head, another competent row collected the Women’s Senior 2 singles pennant, completing a successful autumn of sculling before moving back to sweep.
Having performed well in trials, Rachael was selected for the Youth Olympics. The Youth Olympics Festival took place in Sydney, Australia, between the 17th-21st January. The girls and boys making up the GB team competed in 3 separate boats throughout the competition. Rachael Jefferies, a member of CUWBC, competed in the women’s single scull, quadruple scull and eight, gaining gold in both the quad and the eight.
Quad: Gold to GB, Silver-Tasmania, Australia, Bronze- joint between China and New Zealand.
Eight: Gold to GB, Silver- New South Wales, Australia, Bronze-New Zealand.
The GB team won the rowing competition overall with a total of 6 golds, 5 silvers and 1 bronze medal.
